31 December 2018
On 24th November, a bright Saturday morning, 16 volunteers turned out to clean the River Witham from Bridge End Road to the white bridge in Wyndham Park. This was Grantham Rivercare’s 85th clean up, now in its 14th year.
Nineteen bags of rubbish were collected with a combined weight of over 250kg - that’s a quarter of a tonne! Included in the total were a 12kg pumpkin, a guitar, mountain bike, patio table and chair, computer monitor, a large ceramic flower pot, sleeping bag and six shopping trolleys!
The effort was brightened by the sight of a kingfisher, heron and a native crayfish (released back into the river). We finished with coffee and cake in the new Visitor Centre by the Boating Lake.
We were supported by a volunteer from the Environment Agency and one of our local PCSOs.
This year has involved a total of 120 volunteers donating 360 hours of their time to keep our river beautiful. We have collected 360 bags fo rubbish with a combined weight of 742kg, which included eleven shopping trolleys and eight bikes.
Rivercare is a project supported by Keep Britain Tidy and Anglian Water.
Our next clean up is on Saturday 16th February 2019. Either meet at The Old Ticket Office in Wyndham Park at 9.30am or at Bridge End Road at 10am. Hope to see you there!
