Air Quality on Pinchbeck Road, Spalding

15 January 2019

According to our Council’s own monitoring, Pinchbeck Road has the poorest air quality in the whole of South Holland. This won’t surprise Castle Ward residents, who are used to the smell of fumes from traffic queuing on this busy road, especially when both the level crossings are down.  We now know that air pollution is contributing to an estimated 40,000 premature deaths in the UK per year.   Did you know that pollution levels can be 9-12 times higher inside a car than outside?

Plans for a huge new housing development on the edge of Pinchbeck will push thousands more vehicles per day onto Spalding Road and Pinchbeck Road, making the situation many times worse. Greens believe local Conservative councillors could do much more to provide alternatives to car use, e.g. by extending the inadequate network of cycle lanes, separating cyclists and walkers from traffic, and pushing harder for better rail and bus services.  As well as reducing air pollution, this would also provide more space on the roads for those that need to drive.
